Sensational Smoothies with Chelsey Jackson, RD

To close out our 2025 Wellness Wednesday season, we welcomed Registered Dietitian Chelsey Jackson for an energizing session on building balanced, nutrient-packed smoothies.


Chelsey shared that smoothies can be a powerful tool for adding essential nutrients to your diet...when made thoughtfully. She explained how a smoothie done right can keep you fuller longer and support overall health, but warned that many store-bought smoothies are overloaded with sugar and lack fiber or protein.

Smoothies are a great way to “eat the rainbow.” Each color group of fruits and veggies offers its own health benefits, from boosting immunity to supporting heart, skin, and cognitive health.


Chelsey emphasized 5 essential steps to creating a better smoothie:

  • Choose a smart base: Go for no-added-sugar liquids like water, unsweetened almond milk, or brewed tea.

  • Add a protein source: Greek yogurt, protein powder, tofu, or cottage cheese work well.

  • Include fruit (fresh or frozen): Stick to 1–2 cups and avoid added sugars.

  • Mix in healthy fats: Nut butters, seeds, or avocado make your smoothie more satisfying.

  • Boost with extras: Add greens, spices, oats, or flax/chia seeds for an extra nutrient punch.


She also reviewed which veggies blend best into smoothies (like spinach, cauliflower, and zucchini) and shared a Pineapple Green Smoothie recipe that’s packed with fiber, protein, and vitamins.
